Joshua Tree Perseid Meteor Shower and Milky Way Viewing
Details
Booked a 2-night stay at Cottonwood Campground in Joshua Tree to view the Perseid Meteor shower and Milky Way (Campsite A09).
The 2026 Perseid meteor shower will peak on the night of August 12-13, offering ideal dark-sky conditions with up to 100 meteors per hour.
## Overview
The Perseids are one of the most popular annual meteor showers, occurring when Earth passes through debris left by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. The meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, giving the shower its name, though the meteors themselves burn up about 60–80 km above Earth’s surface. The shower is active from July 17 to August 24, with the peak in mid-August providing the most spectacular display of bright, fast meteors and occasional fireballs (extremely bright meteors) visible to the naked eye. I'm bringing firewood for campfire grill, gas stove, ice chests, table and tarps to sit on. Campsite will accommodate up to 8 people.
