Protecting Our Local Waterways, Fish, Wildlife, Plants, and People from PFAS
Details
They are not called "forever chemicals" for nothing. Dangerous toxins have invaded our local Centre region waterways and Sierra Club Moshannon Group has been testing and sharing results since 2022. That's when PFAS (per and poly fluoroalkyl substances) were found in the Spring and Bald Eagle Creek water sheds by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2019.
You are invited to join David Roberts, Moshannon Group Water Conservation Chair, as he traces the path of contaminants from the Centre County Airport directly into Spring Creek and describes the effects of the pollutants and a course of action. At this event you will:
- Get an explanation of PFAS, where they can be found, and the effect on human health and to natural biological systems.
- Observe the geology of the area where contaminants have been found and trace their path into Spring Creek
- See where and how samples are gathered, what results have been confirmed so far, and what the sources of the contaminants are
- Understand the effects of PFAS on the Walnut Grove community
- Learn what can you do to effect change.
The event is weather permitting. Sturdy shoes or boots should be worn as we will be walking a short distance in Spring Creek Canyon. Depending on storm water flows, we may be able to collect study samples on the day of the event, otherwise, if you would like to participate in sample collection, we will notify registrants of time and date.
