Typical places we often go to meet up

We're a fluid group, and we're willing to play anywhere that feels good and has a place for us to put boards down.

Members are also strongly encouraged to step up and suggest event ideas. But often they don't know what venue so here's a running list of places we can use and details. Members are allowed to update this list as they see fit. Or contact the organizer.

Places that don't require planning in advance

1) Fat Cat - Music & Games
75 Christopher St (at 7th Ave), New York, NY
Recommended times: In the afternoon to early evening, before the bar crowd gets in.
Capacity - Can easily accommodate 8+ simultaneous games. The layout is a bit awkward for huge groups.

Bar/Jazz club with lots of games (pool, ping pong, shuffleboard). A little dark at times, but the owner and staff are awesome. Occasionally there'll be musicians practicing their sets before their performance that night, so noise levels can be on the loud side at times. They have an old board and stones available, but occasionally some of the bar staff can't find it amongst all their other games and things.

2) South Street Seaport
The big food court inside the main building on Pier17.
Recommended times: Morning to early evening.
Capacity - Huge.

Air conditioned, a little touristy but otherwise a nice space with tables and chairs. They close in the evenings, the exact time depends on the season (earlier in winter, later in summer).

1) Central Park Chess/Checkers house
Recommended times: daylight =)
Capacity - ?

While the name suggests it's a place for chess addicts, people have never objected to us using the tables to play go. When the weather is nice, it's a place.

Places that DO require planning in advance
1) Meetup HQ
Recommended times: Weekend afternoons, when Randy is free
Capacity - approximately 10 simultaneous games, possibly more.
Lead time: Make arrangements 1-2wks in advance.

Located on Houston & Broadway, this was the main meeting spot for the group.
Needs a Meetup employee to set up and be present during the event.
Currently closed on weekends due to elevator renovation work.

2) Resobox
41-26 27th Street, Long Island City, NY
Recommended times: Contact Takashi to make arrangements.
Capacity - approx 4 simultaneous games.
Lead time: Make arrangements AT LEAST 1wk in advance
Fees: Resobox charges a per-person fee for using the space, so please work out details in advance (it's somewhere under $10/person, depending on various factors)

A small Japanese gallery with an interest in support Japanese arts (Go, Shogi among them). Very convenient from the Queensboro Plaza station. Quiet, clean, perfect for small workshops and lectures. I don't recommend trying to squeeze more than approx 12 people in the space + tables/chairs.

Kindly contact Takashi at to make arrangements. You have to contact them at least 1 week in advance so they can figure out their schedule. They also have other events in the space at times, so expect to be a little flexible while planning.
