Motor-Scooter International proudly presents the 2026 California Coastal Cannonball, a motor-scooter extreme endurance road race from Motel 6 Rohnert Park, CA across the Golden Gate Bridge and south along California Highway 1 south of San Francisco, the tallest and most dramatic sea cliffs are generally in the Big Sur region between Carmel and San Simeon. The cliffs there commonly rise 1,000–2,000 feet straight above the Pacific, and nearby peaks rise even higher almost immediately inland.
Some standout examples:
- Big Sur coastal cliffs (Monterey County) — many roadside drop-offs are roughly 1,000–1,500 ft above the ocean.
- Cone Peak area — one of the steepest coastal mountain rises in the continental U.S.; the mountain reaches about 5,155 ft elevation only ~3 miles from the sea.
- Ragged Point — famous for sheer bluffs around 300–500 ft directly over the water, with mountains climbing rapidly behind them.
- Hurricane Point / Bixby area — spectacular cliffs typically several hundred to over a thousand feet high above the surf.
In practical terms, the “tallest cliffs” you experience from the road are the Big Sur escarpments, where the Santa Lucia Mountains plunge almost directly into the Pacific. It is one of the most vertically dramatic coastlines in North America.
Then on U.S. Highway 101 to Motel 6, Buellton, CA, a distance of 547 kilometers (340 miles). This race should be both invigorating and challenging. But-for the topography, this race would be a mere sprint for most of us!
**** The Black Bear Diner next to Motel 6 in Rohnert Park has great reasonably priced chow. There's a liquor store across the main boulevard. ****
