MTRA will be riding into Amarillo TX to enjoy the Labor Day Weekend. After leaving ABQ on Saturday, we will head to Portales to take Take US 70 east and take in Dalley's Windmill Museum. Afterward, we head to our hotel to relax prior to taking a free limo to the Big Texan for a nice steak dinner in an old saloon atmosphere. We can also tour the building and enjoy their gift shop. Sunday, we ride thru Palo Duro Canyon and then head to Caprock State Park. We can enjoy the beautiful land formations and roaming bison. Monday we ride to Cadillac Ranch and then head home via I 40.
We are staying at the LaQuinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham, Amarillo Airport. 9305 East Interstate 40. (806)335-9572. Rooms are approximately $120/nite dependent on your needs and discounts. It has an indoor pool. If you would like to join us or are not quite sure, make cancellable reservations as soon as possible, as this is a holiday weekend. Looking forward to a Big Texas Weekend.
Complete Itinerary-
Saturday- meet at Smith's at 200 Tramway Blvd at 7 am. KSU at 730am. Take I 40 to the Loves in Santa Rosa for gas and rest break. Continue on US 84 south. At Fort Sumner take US 60 east. In Melrose take NM 267 to W 1st street in Portales. Lunch at McDonalds. After lunch head to the Allsups at 1032 W 2nd St. After we are all gassed up, we will head to Dalleys Windmill Museum at 722 E Lime St. After walking through the outdoor museum, we will head to Hereford TX. Take US 70E to Clovis and then US 60 into Texas. we will stop at the Loves in Hereford for gas and a rest break. From the Loves we continue on US 60 and merge onto I 27/US 87 heading to Amarillo. We merge onto I 40 and take exit 76 toward TX468 Spur/Airport Blvd. We merge onto I 40 frontage rd, Turn left onto Airport Blvd and another left onto the I 40 Frontage Rd. Hotel will be on the right. Dinner time at Big Texan TBD
Sunday - KSU 8 am.
To Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Entry fee is $8. Head west on I 40 Frontage rd. Turn left onto TX 335 loop south. Take the Farm to Market Rd 1541/ Washington st exit. Turn left onto Farm to Market Rd 1541. Turn left onto TX 217E. Stop at the Visitors Center. To enjoy lunch in Tulia head W on TX 217, Turn left on Farm to Market Rd 1541 and then right onto W Cemetary Rd. Turn left onto I 27 Frontage Rd and take ramp on the left to I 27S. Take exit 77 for US 87 toward Tulia. Turn left onto 87S. Turn left onto SW 2nd St and a sharp right onto E Service Rd. Enjoy lunch at El Camino Dining Room. After lunch we head back to SW 2nd St and gas up at the Valero. We head east on US 86 45 miles and turn left onto Ranch Rd 1065/Geiger and then keep left for the Caprock Canyons State Park entrance. Entry fee $5. Meet at the Visitors Center. To complete our loop ride when we are out of the park we go east on TX 86. Then we head north on State Hwy 70 toward Clarendon. We will gas up and take a break at the Valero. Continue west on US 287 towards Amarillo. Merge onto I 40 W. Take exit 71 and merge onto the Frontage Rd. Dinner at the Cracker Barrel. After dinner we return to the hotel via I 40 east to Airport Blvd. For complete directions and map go to:

Monday- return home KSU 9am
Take I 40 W to exit 62A to go to Cadillac Ranch. After enjoying this landmark we continue home on I 40W. After crossing into NM we will gas up and take a break at the Flying J in Tucumcari off of exit 333. Then we continue on I 40W to Moriarty and take exit 194 to enjoy lunch at Chili's Hills Restaurant. After lunch we say our goodbyes and continue down I 40W as riders peel off to their homes.
