A Winter Ascent of Mount Nittany to celebrate Valentine's Day!
Details
Let's do a short winter hike to the crest of our local landmark on Valentine's Day, just before the next snowstorm is forecast to blanket State College.
We will meet at the trail head kiosk at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Weather is predicted to be relatively mild (well above freezing temp) in comparison with the harsh, cold winter we've experienced so far.
IT IS BEST TO PARK IN THE DESIGNATED PARKING LOT AND WALK TO THE TRAIL HEAD RATHER THAN TRYING TO FIND PARKING ALONG MT NITTANY ROAD.
There will still be more than ample snow on the ground surface, however, so be prepared for that. On steeper portions of the ascent and descent it will likely be slippery; hiking poles or a hiking stick would be helpful in avoiding slips and slides and falls. If you have coils or spikes for your boots those are helpful too.
We will trudge up to the Mike Lynch Overlook (trail post 3) and then (as shown on the trail map) over to trail posts 4 (the Boalsburg Overlook) and 5 and then back, for a grand total of about 2.5 miles and roughly 700-800 ft elevation gain.
Join us for fun in the snow!
