Today we’re talking about self-sabotage—something almost every human experiences, especially around food.
I want to start by saying this clearly: self-sabotage is not a character flaw. It’s not a lack of willpower. And it’s not proof that you “don’t really want change.”
A helpful analogy is alcohol.
Imagine someone who swears they’ll never drink again. They’ve felt the regret, the shame, the physical discomfort, the “Why did I do that?” spiral. They make promises—this is the last time.
And then… life happens. Stress. Loneliness. Celebration. Exhaustion. One drink feels like relief.
The next morning brings regret, shame, and another vow to stop.
We don’t usually call that person weak. We understand there’s something deeper going on—a nervous system looking for relief, comfort, escape, or connection.
Emotional eating works the same way.
Food becomes the “one thing” that soothes, numbs, distracts, or rewards us in the moment. The regret comes later—not because we failed, but because the strategy was temporary.
Today isn’t about blaming ourselves or promising to “do better next time.”
