100K of Pace Bend - ATX100K Six-Pack Series #4

The ATX100K endurance series continues with venue number four, 100K of Pace Bend!!

www.ATX100K.com

Yes, it will be on a Saturday. And yes, IT'S FREE to enter!

This will be a six-lap, 10.4 miles per lap, event to include some of the jewels of Pace bend including the Rock Garden of the Gods.  The route is mostly easy intermediate with some solidly advance skill sections (walk them if you need to).

Pre-rides will be announced as we get closer to the event.  The route will be marked, so if you miss the pre-rides, just pay attention during the event and you should be able to stay on course.

The start time is TENTATIVELY set at 7am, but this may change. We will try to start as early as possible to take advantage of the cooler morning temperatures.  It will be a graduated start to avoid riders clumping up in huge crashes at the first single track section (as entertaining as that might be to spectators).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What to Bring:

This event, like the others is grassroots and self-supported.  That's why it is free to enter. There are no "feed" stations and we may or may not have vendors on site to assist with maintenance and repairs. With that in mind, some of the things you need to bring are as follows:

  • Any bike or bikes you can finish the distance on. There is no stipulation that your steed has to be a "mountain bike", only that it is 100% human powered by you.  Bring a back-up bike if you want.  Be prepared for lots of rocks.
  • Water, and lots of it. Expect to burn through three to six gallons. You are responsible for your own water intake.
  • Electrolytes and whatever other nutritional solutions you need. You are responsible for your own nutrition.
  • Helmet, gloves, sunscreen, and any other protective gear you feel you need. You are responsible for your own safety.
  • Tools, extra tubes, extra derailleur hanger, extra chain links, etc... Whatever you need to keep your bike(s) operational. You are responsible for your own repairs.
  • Anything you might need for first aid.  There will be no EMS on station, no first-aid tent, etc.  We will call 911 for you if needed, but otherwise you tend your own wounds.

Riders will sign waivers accepting complete responsibility for themselves.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's in it for you:

If you have missed the first three 100k's, you can still earn the opportunity to get an ATK100k series jersey if you complete Pace Bend, Barton Creek, and the finale at City Park.  As before, complete any three venues including the finale at City Park, and you are eligible to get a jersey (purchased at cost).  Complete all six, and you will get something even nicer on us.

Top three finishers get a small token to remember their day with.

Can't ride 100K?  Don't fret.  This series is about fitness, mind-set, and pushing your limits.  Come out and turn as many miles of the 62 that you can, push yourself to your limit, and whether you plan to do one lap or the full 100k, finish with the satisfaction that you completed your goal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other stuff:

Be prepared to provide a GPS record of your effort in order to get credit if you are a top three finisher (or stay on the wheel of someone with GPS the whole race), have abnormal lap times that might indicate course cutting, or if you are seen cutting course.

Other updates will be made to this listing as needed.

Great event!! It was impressive to see nearly 60 people show up for what they knew was going to be a grueling ride on one of the hottest days of the year thus far. Mad props to the organizers for the time and effort they put into making these events a reality!

I'm glad to see the BCGB 100K has been moved to November. :)

Have you purchased your jersey yet? The qualification list has been updated to reflect Pace Bend. Get over to Texas Cycle Werks to try on a few samples and place your order ($60 each). We will be placing the orders with Canari (100% made in USA) and sending the fit kit back on Friday afternoon.

This was my first ATX100K and it feels great I pushed myself as much as I did. But, who was the guy taking pics before we started? I am hoping there would be a way to get copies of some of those.

Do you want to know who survived the 108 degree heat? Results are posted! HUGE congratulations to Brian Jett for first place in men and Lisa Lennon for taking 1st place in womens. Josh de Boisblanc came in a close 2nd and the final podium in the men's was Jason Winkleman. Take note: Lisa's performance was on a single speed, she was the only woman to finish the 100k AND was the only person to finish on a single speed.

What a day! The temperature peaked at 108.7 with a heat index of 112. Even so, 58 riders came out and every single one of them rode to their wall and then clawed their way up as far as they could go. A very notable performance by Lisa Lennon, the only woman to complete all six laps and she did so on a single speed hard tail. My thanks and support to our generous sponsors. My ire and incredulity goes out to the inept park personnel. Thanks to all the atx100k organizer team for putting this venue together. And again to you guys... Without you showing up, there would be no ride. You have well earned the respect and admiration of the cycling community.

Definitely was fun my first two laps...not so much at the end of lap 3.

Tough but great day! Thank you Todd, Thad, Tony, and Gary for all your work. Also kudos to the volunteer who stayed at the tent all day. I think her name is Cheryl. If not I apologize.

I will ride until the heat is too much. Since I'm on the SS, that may not take too long.

Get to Pace Bend early because our sponsors are giving away Orange Seal, Toolsafes and T-Shirts BEFORE the race! Also, if you're running tubes and you get a flat, Orange Seal will convert the first 5 flats of the race to tubeless for FREE! Get there by ~6:30, pre-race meeting will be at 6:50ish and we're hoping to send the first group at 7.

Will you be marking the trail?

      July 10, 2013

    • Desert N.

Gary and I will be starting our laps at dawn to mark the course with signs and tape.

The temperature at the 7am start should be around 78 degrees. The first riders should finish around 1pm in a temperature of 94. Riders like me, if we manage to finish, will clear about 4pm in 100 degree heat.

There is a chance for rain during the morning of the race, but with the ground as dry as it is, I cannot see any mud developing unless it's a real torrent.

We have a wide range of riders participating spanning from weekend-warriors to hard-edged speed-kings and speed-queens but with everyone seeking to achieve the same thing...100km on one heck of a trail.

The route should allow for some real speed; included are the TMBRA favorite sections, and in order to make it a true ATX100K challenge, some of the gnarlier chunder have been added in as well.

Should be a great day. See you all there!
