Unmasking the genius of Stanley Kubrick's ‘Eyes Wide Shut!’

Details

Eyes Wide Shut is a 1999 erotic mystery thriller directed by Stanley Kubrick who died of a massive heart attack just 6 days after screening the final cut of this, his final film. Kubrick co-wrote the script with Frederic Raphael which they adapted from Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novella Traumnovelle (or Dream Story). The film’s music is by Jocelyn Pook, its cinematography is by Larry Smith, and it is edited by Nigel Galt. Amazingly, the film was completely ignored at the Oscars but it did receive recognition from elsewhere including The Venice Film Festival, The Chicago Film Critics Association and The Golden Globes. In this essay I will cover the following themes from the film:
everybody but me
masks
emotions
redemption
Desire
Naked
Born again
Coda
We will start this meeting with a video and afterwards everyone is welcome to comment on the video and contribute his or her own thoughts on the film, a great, great film that I look forward to discussing with all of you! Thanks.
