Katsuhiro Ôtomo (Memories) brings one of the greatest (hand-drawn) animations ever created in cinema to the big screen in a beautiful 4K restoration of AKIRA starring Mitsuo Iwata (Paprika), Nozomu Sasaki (Angel Cop), Mami Koyama (City Hunter: Angel Dust), Tesshô Genda (Ghost in the Shell), and Takeshi Kusao (One Piece).

TRIVIA
- The movie consists of 2,212 shots and 160,000 single pictures, 2-3 times more than usual, using 327 different colors (another record in animation film), 50 of which were exclusively created for the film. The reason for this statistic is that most of the movie takes place at night, a setting that is traditionally avoided by animators because of the increased color requirements.
- The shot of Kaneda's bike sliding to a stop away from the camera in the opening bike chase sequence is considered to be the most referenced shot in animation. Homages appear in such shows as Teen Titans, Genndy Tartakovsky's Star Wars: Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, Batman: The Animated Series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Adventure Time, The Simpsons, and even Pokémon.
- The computer sounds, which can be heard during Tetsuo's body scan, were taken from the MU-TH-UR computer in Alien (1979).
- Streamline Pictures is reported to have become the film's distributor when both George Lucas and Steven Spielberg labelled it unmarketable in the U.S.
