TRIVIA
- The increased bloody violence that earned the film an R rating—a franchise first—isn't entirely unprecedented. For instance the Godzilla films of the 1970s were noticeably more violent despite being made specifically for children. Ironically that shift was in part driven by the child audiences, who sent in fan letters requesting more bloody battles. Thus this film's rating ended up fulfilling many a fan's long time wishes.
- Partially filmed with IMAX-certified digital cameras. Out of a 135-minute run-time, 75 min is shot for IMAX while the rest of the film is in the standard 2.39.1 scope ratio. Aspect ratio is a full 1.43.1 for IMAX GT Laser and cropped to 1.90.1 for standard digital IMAX venues.
- Fans were quick to notice Min Tanaka's outfit in promotional footage was a near one-to-one recreation of Hiroshi Koizumi's outfit as Professor Murai in the original Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster (1964).
- Producer Kazuaki Kishida stated that Toho was fine with an R rating in the US, even if it restricted box office appeal, so long as it meant the film was preserved without any edits or censorship. According to Kishida, "Some of this dates back to the original 1954 Godzilla, which, when it was exported from Japan and imported to the States, was very heavily edited. All references to nuclear arms were basically censored from the film. We didn't want that to happen with Minus Zero. We wanted to make sure that the movie was uniform, whether you're in Japan, the States, or anywhere."
- The 31st entry in Toho's live action Godzilla series and 39th Godzilla film overall.
