Dinner + New York Ninja on VHS at The Moon Cafe
Details
Please join me for dinner and a brand new 80s action flick at The Moon Cafe, presented by Black Maria Film Collective's Tuesdays on Tape.
We'll meet outside The Moon Cafe at 6:45pm so we can get a table when doors open at 7:00pm. The film starts at 7:30pm and table service is available all night.
Tickets are $8 + BF and available online here. Due to the nature of the event I recommend booking early so the cafe can ensure enough room for everyone. And please ensure your RSVP is kept up to date.
Originally shot in 1984 this martial arts riot was never completed and sat, unedited in a warehouse, for nearly 40 years before being finished and released. New York Ninja stars taekwondo film legend John Liu as a New York everyman who, when pushed too far, is forced to take the law into his own hands. Dressing as a white ninja, he takes to the streets as a sword-wielding vigilante hell bent on cleaning up the streets of New York City.
One of Vinegar Syndrome's more in depth restorations - including adding missing dialogue, commissioning a new score, and creating a new edit from the original negatives. This genuine 80s action flick was never seen until they released it on 4K, blu-ray, and most importantly VHS in 2021.
Black Maria Film Collective is an organisation that aims to foster and cultivate a collective interest in film as an art form. In Western Australia alone, there are a myriad of masterminds in the realm of film, however, they might often feel alone and helpless in Australia’s current film industry. Black Maria’s primary objective is to support and encourage film culture in WA and highlight its importance in today’s current society.
Trailer.
"With shoestring production values, Liu's energetically silly fight choreography, good use of stolen locations and 35mm imagery in first-rate preservative condition, "Ninja" has cheesily entertaining elements that it combines in a very lively fashion." - Dennis Harvey, Variety.
"Memorable one-liners, absurdly imaginative fight choreography (one scene is inexplicably fought on roller skates), and a freeze frame ending that ranks amongst the best I've ever seen." -- Dan Scully, ScullyVision.
