Dick Moffat’s Best Practices for Spreadsheet Design
Details
Happy New Year to all the MS Excel Toronto meetup group members! If learning more about Excel is part of your 2020 goals, the first session of the year will be an extremely valuable stone to help you build and grow your knowledge and skills.
Dick Moffat has been developing spreadsheet solutions for more than 35 years for major companies Worldwide. (How much is it worth the opportunity of learning from such someone with such vast and deep experience?) He started with VisiCalc, then from the release of Lotus 1-2-3 into Windows and Excel developing solutions for use by users for the management of their businesses small and even very large. In this session, Dick will be speaking to the Toronto Excel Meetup Group detailing his own personal Best-Practices for the design of efficient, consistent, maintainable models for use by yourself but mostly for use by others.
These techniques involve treating the entire Workbook as a true “solution”, making the most of the multi-Worksheet capabilities of Excel, making navigation easy and logical, formatting conceptions that look good, look professional and look consistent, the “Key” formulae that will give you the best performance and results and the least effort in using the model or in making the inevitable ongoing changes. He will discuss how to take advantage of Workbook and Worksheet Protection and managing that though VBA Macros. Tables and Pivot Tables and Dynamic Arrays will be discussed as well in the context of seeking the best spreadsheet solution. File and Range Naming and Folder management will be discussed for multi-file spreadsheet solution management.
This will not be a “Tips and Tricks” presentation (although you will see some to be sure). Rather it is aimed at helping you build better models for better results and happier long-term value out of Excel.
Dick is a believer that we all have to “Be Better” when we build Excel models going forward from here. He hopes that his experience will benefit you in achieving this.
See you on the 21st.
