The Popular Cantata Santa María de Iquique was written by Chilean composer Luis Advis and premiered by the ensemble Quilapayún in 1970.
The cantata recounts the events that took place in the northern Chilean city of Iquique, where hundreds of saltpeter miners and their families sought refuge in the Santa María School after demanding better working conditions. They were brutally repressed by the government in power at the time. As a result, hundreds of workers and their families were massacred.
The Cantata Santa María de Iquique represents the pinnacle of the “Nueva Canción Chilena” (New Chilean Song) movement, blending elements of classical music with the folk traditions of northern Chile. It is also a tragically prophetic work, foreshadowing the violence and repression that would follow the establishment of the Chilean dictatorship in 1973.

Die Volkskantate Santa María de Iquique wurde vom chilenischen Komponisten Luis Advis geschrieben und im Jahr 1970 vom Ensemble Quilapayún uraufgeführt.
Die Kantate schildert die Ereignisse in der nordchilenischen Stadt Iquique, wo Hunderte von Salpeterarbeitern und ihre Familien nach dem Kampf um bessere Arbeitsbedingungen Zuflucht in der Schule Santa María suchten. Sie wurden von der damaligen Regierung brutal unterdrückt. In der Folge wurden Hunderte von Arbeitern und ihren Angehörigen ermordet.
Die Cantata Santa María de Iquique gilt als Höhepunkt der Bewegung „Nueva Canción Chilena“, in der Elemente der klassischen Musik mit der volkstümlichen Tradition Nordchiles verschmelzen.
