September Meetup: Apache Druid and Serverless Clickhouse

Details

Prepare to dive deep into the internals of real-time analytics and OLAP systems at our upcoming Database Internals Meetup! This session is packed with insights on the latest advancements in data processing, analytics, and cloud technologies.

🗣 Speaker 1: Hellmar Becker, Imply (Creators of Apache Druid): Apache Druid - A Fast, Distributed Real-time Analytics Database

  • Apache Druid was born more than 12 years ago to address the need to query large data sets, combining real time events with historical data. In this talk, Hellmar will explain the architectural decisions behind the design of Druid and discuss how Imply has built an end to end analytics system around Druid. Hellmar will explain how Druid is deployed and utilized in the context of Imply's fully managed cloud service, Polaris, and will demonstrate how to build a real time analytics pipeline with Imply in practice.

🗣 Speaker 2: Michael Lex, ClickHouse: Serverless ClickHouse Internals: Blazing Fast, Scalable OLAP Database.

  • ClickHouse is an open source column-oriented distributed OLAP database. ClickHouse Cloud is a serverless hosted offering built on top of it. This presentation goes beyond the surface-level marketing and technical jargon. How does ClickHouse work? Why is it so blazingly fast? And what the heck does "serverless" even mean? We'll explore the inner workings of ClickHouse and the challenges we faced when introducing separation of storage and compute for our Cloud - highlighting both our successes and our failures.

Hellmar Becker is a Senior Sales Engineer at Imply. He has worked in data analytics for more than 20 years in various pre- and post-sales roles. Hellmar has worked with large customers in the finance, telco and retail industries, and spent several years at big data company, Hortonworks, and at Confluent.

Michael Lex is a software engineer turned engineering manager at ClickHouse Inc. His background is in IT consulting and Java backend development. For the past decade he worked (and fought) with many different datastores - ClickHouse coming out as his favorite.

Agenda:
