Culturing and Growing Oyster Mushrooms at Home!

It's been too long, but it's time to get back to our regular meetings!! With your active involvement, we can kick off at an exciting new location in Tempe. Thanks to Perimeter83, we've been granted lab space, so let's join forces and create unforgettable moments together!

Beginning on Saturday Aug 17th, we will be starting our series of three bi-weekly classes to get you growing mushrooms.

If you are new, have no idea how to grow mushrooms at all, you are still welcome. You will not be overwhelmed (promise!), and all supplies needed are provided.

You can absolutely grow mushrooms after completing this three-class series. As we start teaching our Phoenix chapter's growing class, we hope that those who attend will expand their newfound skills for more local ventures.

In this three class series, we will be learning the techniques for growing, and actually growing, the Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus Ostreatus), This is a wood loving mushroom and holds a cherished place in both gourmet culinary establishments and home kitchens alike. This class is a sure bet. It's an easy one to grow, even at home. It's fairly fast to fruit and straightforward to culture. You will end up with the freshest mushrooms possible and along with that, the bragging rights that you grew them yourself. Oh, and they do taste awesome.

You will learn all the basic techniques in mushroom growing, and enough to let you grow even more mushrooms at home if you choose.
In this first class we will learn how to make agar growth media with supermarket ingredients, how to pour plates (Petri dishes) and then inoculate them with mushroom mycelium. We will also go over how to keep work areas fairly sterile and on the cheap. You will also learn why these method are important, and the basics of growing mushrooms.

Again, if you are a total novice and have no idea what I'm talking about, you're still welcome to show up to this class. Trust me, you'll do fine, and everything needed will be supplied!
