CANDELA — A Speed Dating Night Built for People Like Us
Hey, it's Tamara!
You already know I spend a lot of time thinking about how dancers connect, it's literally what Playa Weekender is built on. The idea that real sparks happen when you put people in motion together before you ask them to sit down and make small talk.
So when I started talking with Chris & Jenny of Maloof Entertainment, one of Tampa Bay's very respected Latin night event hosts and 15 years deep in this scene, about what a speed dating night built around that principle would look like, we stopped talking about it and just built it.
The result is CANDELA. And here's why it's different from every other speed dating night you've seen:
Before a single date begins, Jenny Marie of Dance Therapy To Go leads the whole room through a beginner Bachata class. No experience needed.
By the time the speed dating actually starts, you've already moved with these people. You've laughed together. The nervous energy is gone. People who dance together first connect on a completely different level, but our community already knows this. The mainstream dating world hasn't caught up yet.
Here's the evening:
7:00 PM — Doors open at Catrinas Tacos & Tequila in Historic West Tampa. BOGO margaritas all night.
7:30 PM — Beginner Bachata class with Jenny Marie. All levels, no partner needed.
8:05 PM — Speed dating in the historic bank vaults. Five minute rotations, conversation cards at every table, chime transitions, same night match delivery by text.
9:30 PM — Open floor. Music, dancing, food, the kitchen stays open.
This is capped at 20 people — small by design, so every connection counts. $30 at the door covers the bachata class, BOGO margaritas, and the whole night.
