Monthly Discussion: Qur'anic Reasoning

Details

On Thursday, October 29 at 6:30 pm, MPV-NY will be hosting and facilitating a Qur'anic reasoning session focused on Surah al Imran, Ayas 1 through 7.

These passages are where the Qur'an distinguishes "clear" (muhkamat) from "unclear" or "allegorical" (mutashabihat), touching on the idea of how one should read and interpret the Qur'an.

When it comes to a lot of contentious issues among Muslims (is it obligatory for women to wear hijab, what is the Qur'anic stance on LGBTQIA+ people, etc.), the root of the problem is that certain people or groups will claim that the Qur'an "clearly" says this or that, when in fact upon careful reading (and thinking about context, etymologies, etc.) it might not be clear at all...and in fact, maybe it's not even supposed to be clear!

We'll finish the session with 'Isha prayer, led by one of our board members.

Let's learn and unlearn together. Let's demonstrate love in action. Let's build power together and we hope to see you at the event!

Note on anonymity and confidentiality: We do not repeat someone else’s name outside of these sessions related to the sessions. However, we share our learnings from the information we hear in our own perspective. If you do not feel comfortable sharing your face or speaking, that's entirely your right and your decision to do so will never be questioned.

Note on safe spaces: We joyfully and gratefully welcome the opportunities to be held accountable by our peers. We intentionally create “safe conversation containers” for accountability to happen. We practice protocols that allow us to really hear each other and hold each other accountable kindly, directly, and bravely. Our meetings are not recorded for this reason.
