Headlands Hawk Hill Loop & Black Sand Beach detour 4.8m, 1100 ft. Views Galore!

This has become a well loved hike in our group because the views are incredible! We should avoid the Dip Sea crowds too. We take the Coastal trail up, a little detour to the beautiful Black Sand beach, head to Hawk Hill and then back down Julian Trail. The whole thing with the beach is about 4.8 miles and an 1100 ft elevation gain. Crossing my fingers for a clear enough day because the views are really spectacular!

When we detour to Black Sand Beach and back up, it gives us even MORE views and a bit more elevation. You can choose to skip that part and wait at the top or go down and see this amazing beach!

We'll start at Gerbode Valley Trailhead parking lot, which is about 1.6 miles past the Baker-Barry Tunnel on the right hand side. Look for the sign on the right hand side of Bunker Rd that reads "Gerbode Valley Trailhead" (with a right arrow). Turn in there. Don't use Apple Maps because it takes you to the wrong place. Google maps gets you to the correct place for this one. Parking is free. We'll meet near the bathroom.

Please note that the wait time to go through the tunnel can be up to 5 minutes. Please allow extra time. Members really appreciate starting on time and frown at late comers!! Please have "boots on" and be ready to hike at 9:30.
