Hi friends,

Get ready for a long King’s Day escape into deep fairytale forests, panoramic ridges, thermal waters, and proper German schnitzel! From 24 to 27 April, we’re heading to the Black Forest for an active yet cozy long weekend (no days off are required.) Expect mountain air, early sunrises, scenic hikes, wine tasting at home, and that special CampFires atmosphere.

Day 1 - Friday, 24 April: Night Train to Germany
Our adventure begins at 20:15 at Amsterdam Centraal, where we board the direct sitting night train to Freiburg im Breisgau, arriving at 05:26. The connection is direct and smooth. If you prefer more comfort, you are welcome to travel earlier and stay overnight in Freiburg, then meet us for breakfast in the morning. The night train sets the tone - adventurous and romantic.

Day 2 - Saturday, 25 April: Freiburg & Schlossberg Hike
We arrive early in Freiburg (05:26), leave our backpacks in storage, and take only small daypacks. Our first stop is a renowned local bakery for strong coffee and something sweet. From there, we explore Freiburg while it is still waking up.

The old town is one of Germany’s most picturesque, with cobbled streets, colorful façades, and the famous medieval water channels called Bächle flowing gently along the sidewalks. We will walk past the majestic Freiburg Minster, a Gothic masterpiece whose 116-meter tower dominates the skyline, and enjoy the quiet beauty of Münsterplatz before the crowds arrive. Surrounded by forested hills, Freiburg feels intimate yet dramatic at the same time.

Around 8:30–9:00, we sit down for a proper second breakfast in a special local café and prepare takeaway lunch for our hike. If you come a day before, you can have a good sleep and meet us there.

We then head for the approximately 15-kilometer Schlossberg hike along the forested hills above the city. The trail winds through mixed woodland and gentle ridges, offering panoramic views over Freiburg’s red rooftops and, on clear days, toward the Rhine Valley. It is a varied and picturesque route, active but accessible, and the perfect introduction to the Black Forest landscape.

Back in the city, we reward ourselves with an early traditional German dinner, a proper schnitzel, potatoes, and perhaps a local beer. Afterwards, we collect our luggage and take a short train or Uber to the village of March, near Hugstetten station, where our cozy house is located. The evening will be relaxed: light grocery shopping for breakfasts and lunch, games, conversations, and a gentle wind-down after a full day.

Day 3 - Sunday, 26 April: Schauinsland Panorama Hike
After breakfast together and preparing sandwiches for lunch, we head toward Schauinsland, one of the most iconic mountains in the region. It takes about an hour to reach the base, and from there we take the panoramic cable car up to begin our hike from above (Germany longest cable car - 12 euros).
This approximately 18-kilometer route is the classic Black Forest experience. Wide views open over rolling hills, pine forests, and alpine meadows. On clear days, you may even glimpse the Vosges mountains in France.

In the evening, we return to the house for a barbecue and turn the space into our own private wine bar. We will bring local Baden wines and host a relaxed home wine tasting (charged only for those who participate.) It will be cozy, celebratory, and well deserved.

Day 4 - Monday, 27 April: Relaxation & Return
After breakfast and house cleanup, we return to Freiburg for a slower final day.
One option is to unwind at the thermal spa, such as Keidel Mineral-Thermalbad, known for its warm mineral pools and peaceful forest setting, the perfect recovery after two long hikes and before trains home (24 euros for thermal baths, 36.6 with saunas).

Alternatively, you can explore Freiburg’s cultural side. The Augustiner Museum offers art in a beautifully restored monastery, while the Museum für Neue Kunst presents contemporary works. Or simply enjoy coffee and cake on Münsterplatz and let the weekend gently settle.
Our return train departs at 15:27 and arrives in Amsterdam at 21:54 with one change.
