Welcome to Mysthaeven

Details
The majesty of ships under full sail, bringing untold wealth through trade with distant ports of call. Mysterious and exciting visitors from foreign lands, carrying exotic goods and sharing tales of wonder and adventure. Noble knights, merciful lords, learned scholars, and powerful practitioners of the arcane arts. The vibrant hum of daily life as merchants, artisans, and daring adventurers ply their trades in an everchanging setting filled with excitement and mystery.
Yeah, you always wanted to go to Stormcrest.
Unfortunately, you grew up in Mysthaeven. True, it is a seaport, and yes, there is a steady stream of ships visiting. But Mysthaeven’s primary export? Mud. Located at the center of the Slog, a vast mineral-rich wetland on the south coast of Andaroth, Mysthaeven has for decades relied upon the revenue from farming, refining, and exporting mud in a wide range of products.
Mysthaeven is also widely known as a prized penal colony. Prisoners, convicts, and ne’er-do-wells of all stripes and colors from across the land may find themselves, if they’re unlucky, under the watchful eyes of the black-clad Wardens. The Wardens are a privately-owned, militarized force of jailors and guards who, for healthy commissions, maintain some of the most secure prisons in all Andaroth. They incidentally, run an extremely profitable side-trade in mud-farming labor for both local government and entrepreneurs. Those prisoners lucky enough to survive long enough to complete their sentences are turned out penniless and end up joining the population of Mysthaeven for lack of other options.
Sure, there are opportunities to make money. Fishing boats can always use crew. Caravans frequently look for protection from the kobolds, bog men and worse that prowl the Slog. The harbormaster employs crews of stevedores and dock hands to keep trade moving. And of course, there’s always mud farming. Ugh.
The city isn’t without its resources. If you’re lucky enough to get in with a guild, you can count on a plush life. The Potter’s Guild is the most powerful of the legal guilds; the Brotherhood is another option for those of more flexible moral outlook. Independent businesses crop up all the time; most fail, but you never know you could get lucky. And there’s always the life of a civil servant. Sure it’s not glamorous but the clever ones can make a fair living off of kickbacks and at least you don’t get muddy.
You know greatness is within your grasp. You just need that one lucky break to kick things off. Hopefully it comes sooner than getting afflicted with mud rot.
