THURSDAY: Linley Valley loop


Details
Depending on the heat/humidity, hike will range 11-14km/285-385m accumulated elevation gain @ "a notch over" moderate pace.
You s/b @ minimum a strong “B/moderate” level hiker or higher to enjoy this hike. Not suited to anyone with balance/knee/mobility/cardio deficiencies.
Short snack break along the way.
Pet-free hike/NO DOGS please. No pit toilet.

Loop on mainly shaded, forested trails, lots of ups & downs on ridges & rocky knolls. We'll pass by Linley Fir (ID #1451 in BC BigTree registry). Note: it's slightly off the trail...you'll need boots & long pants if you want to see it up close. Up to rock cairn overlooking Departure Bay, hike partway around the edge of Cottle Lake on new walkway, then up and down ridges back to vehicles. Hike up Cottle Hill (radio towers) will be heat/humidity dependent.
Expect dry, slippery conditions (trails are littered with dry/slippery Arbutus leaves) with varied and unstable terrain (stones, roots & some blowdown). Hiking boots/shoes with good tread required. Hiking poles may be beneficial for this one.
