Gabriola Island Discovery hike (walk onto ferry): loop @ western end.
Details
Approx 12km/200m accumulated elevation gain @ "a notch over" moderate pace. A group of us did a short recon last month, I've plotted out a longer loop...expect some route finding.
You s/b a strong "B" hiker or higher to enjoy this hike. Not suited to anyone with balance/knee/mobility/cardio deficiencies.
Pet-free/NO DOGS please. Washrooms onboard BC Ferries, pit toilets @ Descanso Bay & Gabriola Sands Parks.
Meet @ the walk-on area just beyond the ticket booth by 9:10 for the 9:20 sailing.
Hope to catch the 1:10 ferry back, next sailing would be @ 1:45, so please do not have any time commitments. Pack a lunch along with all the usual gear. Cell coverage is non-existent in some areas.
BC Ferry walk-on: Seniors travel free, otherwise, it's $11.15 for a round trip. (tip: Experience Card provides a discount).
Ferry schedule & FAQ: ferry-schedule
Parking suggestions: Coast Bastion parkade or free parking along Esplanade (note: "rough" area, approx 12 minute walk to terminal).
This adventure to Gabriola Island is a mix of paved road, forested trails, mountain bike trails and some shoreline walking. Loop includes following parks: Descanso Bay, Malaspina Galleries, Gabriola Sands with twin beaches, one side overlooks Pilot Bay, the other Taylor Bay. Possible lunch spot as there are picnic tables and then continue thru Cox Community Park, before the last hill back up to North Road to ferry terminal.
REMINDER: be prepared to show some of the First Aid supplies that you carry in your pack. See Ten Essentials link below. Pack for cooler and wet weather.
Expect slippery conditions (the shoreline will be extremely slippery!) with unstable terrain (stones, roots & some blowdown). Hiking shoes or boots with good tread required. Poles may be beneficial for the slippery shoreline!
