Discovery Hike: Benson Bluffs/Climbing Crags and 1/2 Benson loop (version 2)
Details
Please read full description so there aren't any surprises! This hike does NOT summit Mount Benson. I've only pre-hiked a portion of it, the section from the log "sky-deck" up to Gail's Trail to Mount Benson 1/2 way mark will be new to me, expect route-finding. This is a discovery hike, please do not have any time commitments, end time is a guess.
Approx 10.5km/550m elevation gain @ "a notch above" moderate pace til we start the climb up to the climbing crags, then pace will be adjusted for steep incline UP!
You s/b @ minimum a strong “B/moderate” level hiker or higher to enjoy this hike. Not suitable for anyone with balance/cardio/knee deficiencies. Not a beginner hike!
Due to the cold weather, just a brief break/photo op @ “sky deck” and @ 1/2 way mark.
Pet-free/NO DOGS please. Pit Toilet @ parking lot.
REMINDER: be prepared to show some of the Ten Essentials/First Aid supplies that you carry in your pack.
Hike along the Outer Bypass, then turn UP trail(s), to Benson Bluffs/ Climbing Crags, along ridge(s), pass by a memorial bench, a log “sky-deck”, then along seldom used trail to Gail's Trail, to 1/2 way Mount Benson mark, before descending the main trail to parking lot.
Expect puddles, wet undergrowth & slippery conditions with varied and unstable terrain (stones, roots & navigate over some blowdown). Hiking boots/shoes with good tread required. Poles will be beneficial!
