Discovery/Rediscovery Hike: Roberts Roost
Details
Please read full description for this discovery/rediscovery hike so there aren't any surprises!
While the mountain bike trails and access road s/b in decent condition, the trails @ the Roost viewpoint section may be a bit trickier, as the ones I've hiked were quite eroded and rocky. While I'm familiar with this hike, I'll be following someone's track for the loop @ the end/Roost, so some sections will be new to me.
9-11km/365-385m accumulated elevation, "a notch above" moderate pace. Be prepared for adventures, as Dave will be helping me scout out a future hike (if group is willing, we may even hike up a new to me trail).
You s/b @ minimum a strong “B/moderate” level hiker or higher to enjoy this hike. Not suitable for anyone with balance/cardio/knee deficiencies.
Short snack break @ viewpoint/Roberts Roost.
Pet-free/NO DOGS please. Pit toilet near parking lot.
REMINDER: be prepared to show some of the Ten Essentials/First Aid supplies that you carry in your pack.
Route planned: active mountain bike trails, then approx 30 minutes access road walking (to avoid DND/Military Range), some "spicy" trails, and a short scramble. Return via access road (approx 30 minutes) to Outer Bypass to scout out a new to me trail. Thanks Dave!
The Roost viewpoint overlooks Nanaimo, Nanaimo Harbour & beyond with Mount Benson as a backdrop.
Expect puddles, wet & muddy conditions with varied and unstable terrain (stones, roots & navigate over some blowdown). Hiking boots/shoes with good tread required. Poles would be beneficial.
