Artists Talk - Hastings City Art Gallery
Hastings City Art Gallery, 201 Eastbourne Street East, Hastings, NZJoin me to hear from exhibiting artists Raewyn Tauira Paterson (Ngāi Tūhoe) and Asaki Kajima for a floor talk exploring their newly commissioned works presented in Gwen Malden Te Matau-a-Māui Art Commissions.
We will meet at the Gallery entrance few mins earlier and afterwards we will have a coffee together and share our thoughts.
Raewyn Tauira Paterson (Ngāi Tūhoe) is a mixed-media artist, fascinated with contemporary forms of pattern rooted in mātauranga Māori. She has worked at EIT as a lecturer and educator at its IDEAschool, coordinating the Bachelor of Creative Practice degree. She is particularly proud of the community project she led to design and install tukutuku panels at EIT’s marae Te Ara O Tāwhaki. She has curated and exhibited in numerous exhibitions across Te Matau-a- Māui.
Asaki Kajima was born and raised in Japan. She grew up in a family with a florist business established almost a century ago. Her ethereal sculptures, made using materials found in Aotearoa, are inspired by the traditional Japanese artistic floral practice of Ikebana. Grounded by her graphic design and visual art study in Tokyo and an expanding record of exhibitions across Aotearoa, Kajima has begun to build a national profile. For instance, she received the Fieldays No.8 Wire National Art Award in 2020 and was a finalist for the RT Nelson Sculpture Award in 2025.

Walk on Te Mata Peak
Te Mata Peak Main Gates Car Park, 357 Te Mata Peak Rd, Parkvale, Havelock North, NZCome and join us at the Main Gates Car Park and we will walk on the Karaka Wander track -- the Yellow track on Te Mata Peak. This is a loop walk and a wonderful wander through varied landscapes of the upper parts of the Park-- mature trees, native bush and open grassland to dramatic cliffs and panoramic views.
The route passes a large grove of Karaka trees believed to be more than 200 years old.Wear clothing that will make walking on the peak enjoyable on the day. The track is well formed but there are some muddy uneven sections , so wearing strong footwear is advisable.
We will return to the Car Park and drive the short distance up towards the top and stop at the Te Mata Peak cafe for Brunch.
