The Visions of Hildegard von Bingen

Details

Hildegard von Bingen resists categorization. Her views are a blend of Theology and Classical Natural Philosophy (Aristotle, Galen, and Hippocrates). She is a Doctor of the Catholic Church whose medical texts recommend the use of herbs and crystals. From early childhood, Hildegard experienced vivid, luminous visions—often described in her own words as “the shadow of the living light.” These episodes were accompanied by bodily suffering, exhaustion, and sensory overwhelm. Modern neurologists have speculated that these may have been migraine auras, given her descriptions of flashing lights and physical symptoms, but Bingen credits these visions for her wisdom and insights. She saw herself as merely the messenger.

Her life was an astonishing fusion of medieval orthodoxy and visionary originality, where faith, intellect, nature, and creativity were inseparable. She has since become a figure of deep interest to theologians, feminists, mystics, and scientists alike.
