Please join us for a close reading of this Vonnegut classic. Harrison Bergeron is a dystopian short story set in a future where the government enforces absolute equality. To ensure that no one is smarter, stronger, or more talented than anyone else, citizens are forced to wear “handicaps”—weights, masks, or mental-disrupting devices that suppress their abilities.
The story follows Harrison, a gifted and rebellious teenager who escapes custody and publicly defies the system in a dramatic act of self-expression.
