As you leave your home, you discover that your nose has taken on a life of its own and refuses to return to your face. It even gets promoted above you at work! This is the experience of Major Kovalyov in the absurdist Russian short story, The Nose by Nikolai Gogol.

This is an influential short story in Russian literature, serving as a comedic social commentary on bureaucracy, careerism, and inequality more generally.
