Frozen Head State Park
Tub Springs Campsite
Saturday, October 14 - Sunday, October 15th
Description:
Frozen Head State Park is located about an hour West of Knoxville and is considered one of the pre-eminent backpacking areas outside of the Smokies. Being Mid-October, we should have cool weather and chilly nights to finally break out the warm sleeping bags and puffy jackets. There is a fire tower close by, and, with luck, we may even enjoy some fall foliage at the higher elevations.
On day one it’s about a 4-mile hike up to the Tub Spring Campsite, with about 1,700 feet of gain, so be prepared to break a sweat. Heading home on day two will then mostly be downhill. The campsite is located at over 3,000 feet so pack warm.
Logistics:
We will meet at the Old Mac Trailhead at 1:00PM EASTERN TIME (12:00 CDT) on Saturday, October 14th. The trailhead is located about a tenth of a mile beyond the Frozen Head State Park Visitor Center. We will proceed to hike up the North Old Mac Trail (3.55 miles) and then hook a right on to the West Lookout Tower Trail for the last quarter mile. The campsite is called “Tub Spring Campsite”. On Sunday, hiking down, there are a number of similar length trails that lead back to the parking lot.
Please familiarize yourself with the trails as there are quite a few that leave out of the Old Mac Trailhead.
Please message me to confirm your spot and get off the waitlist.
