Foraging wineberries will be the focus of this walk, however, will include looking for raspberries, blackberries and seeing and discussing other summer edible and medicinals.
Please read through this entire posting.
Friday, July 4 (yes, the 4th of July) 9:30 AM.
Location: Black Hill Regional Park
20930 Lake Ridge Drive, Boyds, Maryland 20841
(upper Montgomery County)
Directions to Park: I-270 to exit 16 (Father Hurley Blvd / Ridge Rd / Rte. 27) toward MD-27 E/Damascus, left MD-355 N (Frederick Road) 0.9 mile
left onto W Old Baltimore Rd, left Lake Ridge Dr. into the park.
Meet in parking lot 5 (it is just beyond the parking lot for the visitor/nature center) Lot 5 has a sign saying “Boat Rental / Pontoon Boat Tours/ Restrooms / Parking Lot 5" (meet in the “upper tier” of that parking lot).
Important: Please note the Meetup organizer and leader of this walk is severely allergic / chemically sensitive to fragrances, petrochemicals, etc., participants are requested to restrain from using perfumes/colognes, scented sunscreen, and other scented personal care products; and with regard to bug spray restrain/minimize and only use if it becomes absolutely necessary.
Bring rigid container (wineberries are delicate), water, and a wide-brim hat is helpful for both sun & any problems with gnats/flies. Optional: field guides, camera.
Long pants and closed toed shoes or hiking boots recommended.
Pace - naturalist shuffle to normal walking pace. Paved paths, grass, and natural trails (a few of which are a bit steep (but which could be opt-out of)). There will be several options to leave the walk early if necessary. Approx time 2 1/2 hrs.
Children (w/ their parents) are welcome as long as they are old enough to do the walk/hike.
Ending time is approximate depending on how much time we spend picking berries, how much discussions, and how hot it may get.
If you wish to make a day of it, the Park has a large lake and rents Kayaks, Canoes, Paddle boards, Rowboats, & Pedal Boats.

Inclement weather - the walk will be cancelled in the event of rain/inclement weather, notice of cancellation will be sent to those who RSVP’d and posted on the Meetup group site by 7:00 am the day of the walk.
