Wildlife surveys have been revolutionized using game cameras to photograph large species that have secretive habits. Now, these cameras have been adapted to photograph much smaller species, too. A recently created method that uses fences to guide small animals toward the buckets containing the game cameras (the Adapted-Hunt Drift Fence Technique) has led to further success. You will be amazed at the critters that have been captured on camera during surveys in Ohio and New York, including in nearby Bergen Swamp.
Professor Andrew Hoffman, a conservation biologist from St. John Fisher University, will share the results of his photo surveys for the federally threatened Massasauga Rattlesnake and other small animals using the AHDriFT technique. Could what we learn become the basis for a wildlife survey at the BANC Sanctuary or in our home gardens?
The evening will begin with a potluck supper. For dinner, bring your place setting and a dish to pass that will serve 8 to 12 people. If you are unable to join us for supper, you can still attend the program, which should begin at about 7:00 p.m. No registration is required. For information, contact Shirley Shaw, 585-752-4770
