Weekend option: Carrizo Plains, wildflowers and more!

While this is not a super bloom or peak bloom month, the recent rains have brought out plenty of beautiful wildflowers to photograph. There is also good potential for wildlife, so be sure to keep an eye out for tule elk, pronghorn, condors, eagles, owls, songbirds, and more.
We will meet at the junction of Shell Creek Rd. and Hwy 58 at 7:00 AM for a quick briefing and introductions.

If you're new to photography or to the Meetup group, please reach out, I'm happy to help and answer your questions. These meetups are great learning opportunities.

Gear to consider bringing:

• Macro, standard, and wide-angle lenses
• Long telephoto lens for wildlife
• Off-camera flash
• Tripod
• Diffusers
• PLAMP (plant clamp for macro work)
• Kneeling pad or knee pads
• Shutter release cable or remote

A variety of lenses will give you the most flexibility. You'll have opportunities to shoot macro, stunning landscapes of green hills covered in wildflowers, beautiful panoramas, and if the weather helps, amazing reflections off of Soda Lake.

Carpool: I can take up to 3 people if anyone would like to carpool, just let me know.

Field etiquette:
Please be respectful of the areas where wildflowers are growing. Even if you can't see them, there could be seeds under your feet getting ready to sprout. Take only photos and leave only footprints. Do not trespass, and watch your footing to minimize impact on the flowers. Others will be photographing here as well, so let’s leave the area as we found it.

Logistics & preparation:

• Cell service is generally available along Hwy 58 but can be spotty deeper into Carrizo Plains.
• Bring plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, and a jacket. Layered clothing is recommended as conditions can change quickly.
• There are no restrooms along Shell Creek Road. Restrooms in the Carrizo Plains area are limited, including the California Valley Community Services building and within Carrizo Plains National Monument.
• Fuel up and consider packing a lunch — services in California Valley are extremely limited.
