Forest Bathing ~ Shinrin Yoku

Details

Forest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku, is the Japanese practice of immersing oneself in the atmosphere of the forest, not for exercise or hiking, but simply to be present among the trees. The term was first coined in the 1980s, and has since become a recognised wellness practice around the world.

According to Dr. Qing Li, a leading researcher in forest medicine, forest bathing supports both physical and mental wellbeing by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress hormones, and enhancing immune function, particularly through exposure to phytoncides, the natural aromatic compounds released by trees.

β€œThis is not exercise, or a workout. It is simply being in nature, connecting through our senses β€” sight, smell, touch, and sound,” writes Dr. Li.

Forest Bathing Procedure

1. πŸƒ Opening Circle
We gather, introduce ourselves, and set a gentle intention for the event.

2. πŸƒ Guided Grounding Meditation
A brief practice to settle the body, quiet the mind, and arrive fully into the forest.

3. πŸƒ Personal Exploration
Participants wander slowly and intuitively, connecting with the forest in their own way.

4. πŸƒ Sensory Attunement Activities
Simple invitations (touch, scent, sound) deepen presence and enhance sensory awareness.

5. πŸƒ Closing Circle
We return, share reflections if we wish, and offer gratitude to the forest and to one another.
