Fruits and nuts, processing and cooking.
Details
I'll bring in some crab apples, callery pears, spices and whatever edibles call to me. We'll process, cook and make delicious apple butter that you can take home. If desired we can review how to stock up on foods, what keeps well, what's necessary and what ain't. Of course we'll also spend some time outdoors looking for useful plants and discussing the nature of nature. I know it's short notice but if it's a poor turnout we can repeat it. No shortage of crab apples in Pennsylvania and they just get sweeter the colder it gets.
The next few meet ups will focus on processing and preparing various nuts and seeds and discussing the nutritional values and such. With every meetup, as long as the weather isn't horrible, we will spend some time outside seeing what nature is up to. So gather up any wild fruits, nuts, seeds you can find. Keep them a cool place for future meetups.
We plan to be able to vary the educational material based on what you are interested in learning and what is going on in the world.
If you're not too busy fighting off zombies, after learning some basics about foods, we'll be learning how to stay warm with proper clothing, shelter and fire. Future meetups will focus on learning about and making medicinal extractions, starting with burn cream. Next will be learning how to take care of and use a sharp tools without drawing blood. Different woods, different fire pits for different situations. How to utilize different ignition methods and how to keep a fire going, I then plan a meetup that will focus on bow drills. If you still have fingers left you will carve yourself a bow drill and get a fire going with only friction.
After October 31, dates for future meetups include 11/13 likely indoors at Kimberton Clinic, 12/12/26 (location to be determined) after which we may share lunch at Excursion Cidery, then stick around Phoenixville for the Firebird festival. 12/19 will be another meetup.
Remember to check the Meetup web site for more events or in case of severe weather or I am kidnapped by angry weasels. I plan to continue Nature Studies meetups at least a couple of times a month with the assistance of some Tracker School folk and other outdoorsy friends. Kids are welcome but must be attended to Very Closely by an accompanying adult. We will have some classes specifically oriented to kids, Stay tuned!
