One way to celebrate the Martin Luther King Holiday is with volunteer activities in the community. Some opportunities this year are below.

  1. Keep Durham Beautiful Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. clean ups
  • N Mineral Springs Road Cleanup (Sat, 1/17, 12-2PM)
  • Erwin Mills Historic Cemetery Workday (Sun, 1/18, 11AM-1PM)
  • Lakewood Shopping Center Cleanup with El Futuro (Sun, 1/18, 11AM-2PM)
  • NC 751 Cleanup from Southpoint Autopark Blvd to NC 54 (Mon, 1/19, 10am-12pm)
  • Walltown Cleanup with Branches Community School (Mon, 1/19, 10:30AM-12PM)
  • Bragtown Tree Care + Litter Cleanup (Mon, 1/19, 12-3PM)
  • Plus other events from other Durham community organizations

2. Keep Durham Beautiful is collaborating with Rewild Earth, Durham Parks & Recreation, and New Hope Bird Alliance, to organize monthly Invasive Plant Removal Workdays. Upcoming workdays to remove harmful invasive species:

  • Forest Hills Park (1639 University Dr) --Friday, January 16, 3-5PM, and Saturday, January 17, 10AM-12PM
  • Glendale Heights Park (707 W Murray Ave), Friday, February 20, 3-5PM and Saturday, Ferbruary 21, 10AM-12PM

3. Bike Durham Community Built Bus Stops Initiative
Bike Durham is inviting community volunteers to join them in auditing bus stops lacking shelters (Jan. 17th), then prepping the benches (Jan. 19th), building the benches (Jan. 26th), and installing them on Transit Equity Day (Feb. 4th).

These events are not sponsored by the Sierra Club.
