As you may have heard, the Forest Service has begun the process of rescinding the Roadless Rule, which has kept 45 million acres of our most treasured landscapes – including 144,000 acres in North Carolina – protected from logging, drilling, mining, development, and road-building for the last 25 years.

You can comment through the Sierra Club's Action Page or use USDA's official process. You can do this any time you have a few minutes, until September 21st.

In an op-ed published last year when rescission was first suggested, David Reid, the N.C. Sierra Club's issue lead on national forests, noted that the U.S. Forest Service already struggles to keep its existing roads usable – never mind build new ones – as its maintenance backlog has ballooned into the billions of dollars and the agency's staff has been slashed.
