Details
Hike-- May 17, 2025, sponsored by the Dakota Prairie Chapter of the North Country Trail Association.
This is a 9-mile, one-way hike through the heart of the Sheyenne National Grasslands. The hike will begin at 11:00 am at the East Trailhead located adjacent to Jorgen’s Hollow Campground and will head west to Forest Service Road 1212. Hikers will be shuttled back to Jorgen’s Hollow. Hikers will experience a remnant of tallgrass prairie and oak savanna, one of the rarest ecosystems in North America. The Sheyenne Grasslands provides habitat for the largest population of greater prairie chickens in North Dakota as well as the state’s only population of endangered western prairie-fringed orchid and Dakota skipper butterfly. Hikers should pack a lunch, carry enough water for this 4 to 5 hour hike and take precautions against woodticks.
After the hike, the Silver Prairie Saloon in McLeod will be open for socializing.
