Talk summary
The usual way of creating a PDF document is through a typesetting tool such as LaTeX or Word. LaTeX is well-known for its steep learning curve and high-quality PDF output. Word is widely used but tears will be streaming down your face once you learn CSS, because you will realize how much of your life has been wasted in styling Word documents. In this talk, I'll introduce a new way to typeset documents and generate PDFs. The underlying technology is decades old and right under your nose: HTML (whenever you read a web page, you are using HTML). Normally HTML is presented as a continuous page in the browser, and I'll show how to typeset the continuous page into discrete pages that can be printed to PDF (or on paper). You may open https://yihui.org/litedown/, press P on your keyboard (or Ctrl + P / Cmd + P), and see a real example to decide whether you want to attend this talk. If time permits, I'll give a gentle introduction to the R package litedown, of which generating paged HTML documents is only a small feature.
