Please join me for an early walk in the beautiful Leita Thompson Park.
These trails are non technical made of soft gravel and plenty wide to walk side by side. Each lap around is 2.25 miles with very little elevation. Plan is to do 2 laps but you are welcome to leave after 1. We will be going thru the parking lot after lap 1.
Parking is free. There are no bathrooms but there are 2 sets of porta potties.
Dogs are welcome but they must be on a leash.
We are meeting in the middle huge open overflow lot !!
There are 3 parking lots. The first is the dog park, the 2nd is the huge open overflow lot and the third is the green roofed Pavilion. We are meeting in the middle overflow lot. If you pass it and turn into the Pavilion parking lot just turn right and there is a driveway to the overflow lot. Go slow on Woodstock Road because if you miss all this you have to do a Uturn on Woodstock Road and go all the way around and it takes forever in traffic.
Leita Thompson, called Miss Leita (1884-1978) had a strong appreciation for hard work and independence for women. At age 16 she joined the National Womens Party which later helped pass the womens sufferage admendment in 1920. Leita made her fortune working in the banking industry and become one of the first female banking executives in the country. She founded the Leitalift foundation in 1956 to help support working women. For many years Leita Thompson, a hard working woman herself, personally and thru her Leitalift Foundation, made it possible for working women to enjoy a fuller life by providing housing on her property. She purchased this property in 1946 and made it her home until her death in 1978. At the time of her death this property was 107 acres went to the Leitalift Foundation. In 2001 the foundation donated the property to Roswell. The 16 apartments on the property today are managed thru the Roswell Parks and Recreation and they have continued Leita's wish to only renting to working women.
