Monthly Meeting - Ollie's American Restaurant

Ollie's Restaurant

** There will be two meetings in the month of January due to holiday obligations. Location has changed since we no longer can confidently secure the private room at Costello's! Come to our events regardless of venue :) ** Join us at this month's meeting to enjoy the company of like-minded individuals, dining, and discussion. Meetings, focused on discussion, are informal in nature and open to all interested parties. We look forward to meeting new people and seeing familiar faces. For Janaury 26th only, we'll meet at Ollie's American Restaurant in Edwardsville across the street from Costello's restaurant. A manager has permitted use of their back area 'blue room' allowing us to reserve the space while other customers will be seated towards the front of the restaurant. Ask for Justin Vacula party of ten to find us. Please bring cash to the meeting for ease of restaurant staff processing our orders. Next month's event with special guest speaker Dr. David Kyle Johnson will take place at Grotto Pizza's private room near the Wyoming Valley Mall. Might you need transportation to the meeting? Members are willing to carpool to help you attend meetings. Post in the comment section here to coordinate with group members. Kim and Mike suggested this idea and can help. Make a donation or become a dues-paying member to help keep our Meetup.com site online ($15/month) and help account for other group expenses by paying with cash at a meeting. Donations will be collected each event. Your support is appreciated. Join and participate on our group Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1965929210344836/) to engage with group members and interesting links outside of group events. Comments, suggestions, and feedback are welcome. Message Justin Vacula though Meetup messages with input. -- Some topics to be discussed: Info to come. Dr. David Kyle Johnson speaks: Science Fiction as Philosophy

Dr. David Kyle Johnson, a returning favorite speaker, joins us in February for a special event at which he will speak about intersections between science fiction and Philosophy with particular focus on the series 'The Orville.' From his speech: For many fans, The Orville is the Star Trek they have been waiting for. Although some expected it to be like Spaceballs, it turned out to be more like M*A*S*H*. It involves comedy, yes. But it also features real and lovable characters, in interesting situations, and offers up biting social and philosophical commentary (what science fiction does best). Indeed, it does the latter like no other science fiction series since Star Trek: The Next Generation. In this talk, in anticipation of the second season in 2019, and in an effort to argue that The Orville is perhaps the most important science fiction now on television, Dr. David Kyle Johnson will offer a brief overview of the social commentary offered by The Orville in the first season. “About a Girl” deals with transgender issues. “If The Stars Should Appear” chastises humanity for ignoring climate change. “Krill” and “Mad Idolatry” offer criticism of religion. “Cupid’s Dagger” raises questions about sexual assault. And “Majority Rule” criticizes the “democratization of information” through social media, and even ridicules the idea of democracy itself. I shall treat each episode as a work of philosophy, clearly articulating and then briefly evaluating its argument. More about Dr. Johnson: David Kyle Johnson, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Philosophy at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He earned a master’s degree and doctorate in philosophy from the University of Oklahoma. In 2011, the American Philosophical Association’s committee on public philosophy gave him an award for his ability to make philosophy accessible to the general public. Dr. Johnson regularly teaches classes on metaphysics, philosophy of religion, philosophy of mind, logic, critical thinking, and scientific reasoning. He published papers on free will, the problem of natural evil, the multiverse, the existence of souls, and many related topics. He also publishes prolifically on the intersection of pop culture and philosophy. One of his books, Inception and Philosophy: Because It’s Never Just a Dream, inspired an authors@Google talk with more than half-a-million YouTube views. -- We will be using the private meeting room at Grotto Pizza Wilkes-Barre near the Wyoming Valley Mall. The room offers a quiet atmosphere, privacy, and ample space. The room, reserved in advance, allows for a two hour timeslot (3PM-5PM). Members are welcome to stay in the room following 4:30 and/or move to the general restaurant area for more conversation. Order from Grotto Pizza's full menu which includes alcoholic beverages from their bar area and options for many diets. Might you need transportation to the meeting?
