All are welcome to join us for our monthly meeting. Learn about local environmental news and happening in Northeast PA. Bring a friend or make a new one as we talk about the Sierra Club and upcoming events. This is also a great way to see if you'd like to get more involved and volunteer with outings or one of our many leadership roles. We love to have new faces and look forward to meeting you.
This month we will be meeting at South Abington Community Park

Engage in an enthusiastic discussion of the acclaimed “Two Degrees” by Alan Gratz, which explores the devastating effects of climate change, as we take a leisurely stroll along the scenic banks of the Lackawanna River in the Blakely Borough Recreation Complex, continuing onto the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail into Condella Park. Join us as we delve into the compelling accounts of four young teens who experience different climate-related disasters and their impacts on them and their communities.
The trail is a 1.75-mile loop through the woods on a mostly level, packed dirt and gravel pathway, three to five feet wide, with some exposed tree roots and uneven terrain. It includes a boardwalk bridge over the river (bring your camera!). One section is paved, and participants will cross a road to continue to the trail. Expect some bike traffic and other walkers, as the trail is popular. Benches are available along the trail for rest, snacks, and conversation. While it normally takes approximately 30-35 minutes to complete the walk, we will be taking it slow and easy, and participants can expect to spend 60-90 minutes on the trail.
This event is free and open to the public, with adults and children ages 12 and older welcome (guardian must accompany minors). No dogs are allowed in the Recreation Complex.
Participants are encouraged to wear/bring mosquito repellant, sunscreen, and a hat, and wear sturdy closed-toe hiking boots or sneakers with non-slip soles. Trekking/hiking poles may be used for added stability if desired. Water and snacks are recommended. Restrooms are available in the Recreation Complex, where the walk begins and ends. Parking is plentiful in and around the complex in several parking lots. While the Blakely Borough Recreation Complex has a wheelchair accessible parking lot and entrance, and the paved pathway is accessible to most, the dirt/stone pathway in the woods is not wheelchair or stroller-friendly.

Join the Sierra Club Pennsylvania Chapter for our family friendly weekend-long Annual Outing at Hickory Run State Park! Sierra Club friends, partners, staff, and members from across the state get together once a year for a weekend of camping, hiking, swimming, grilling, and exploring together.
This completely free event is located at Hickory Run's Group Cabin Campground (think summer camp!) so you don't need to own a tent to participate, and beginning campers are encouraged to attend! These are rustic cabins, but there are a few locations with electricity if you need it for a medical reason. Unfortunately, furry friends are not allowed at the group campground but there are dog friendly sites at the family campground down the road if you would like to camp and explore on your own.
Additional details will be shared with participants closer to the event! Please let me know if you need any sort of accommodations to fully participate in our weekend. Can't wait to see you there.
