NNO Book Club: Read (or Don’t)
Details
A book club where the host is saying you can skip reading the book? Yep. It’s finally happened; she has lost her mind.
But seriously, we are doing something a little odd this month with two books that were never going to quite work as main selections for reasons that will become clear.
This month we are reading or watching some combination of the below:
>> Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
This one was on the list forever but both libraries always had 6-8 week waits on their 40+ copies…and then the movie was announced and it got even worse. This one has been out forever and I am sure some of you have already read it.
Or if you haven’t read it and won’t – there is a movie. With Ryan Gosling.
Or do both, if you are so inclined.
>> Remarkably Bright Creatures
This one isn’t quite in our wheelhouse but one of the main narrators is a Pacific Giant Octopus and he may be one of my favorite characters of the last 10+ years of reading. I highly recommend doing the audiobook for this one because the narrator for Marcellus is perfection.
If you don’t want to read or just need some screen time – Netflix did a movie of this with Sally Field (who is honestly perfect casting for this).
So read (or listen, I suppose) or watch or both.
And the final reason we are doing two books and two movies or some combination thereof is that I honestly don’t have super deep or involved questions for either of these. Both are entertaining and unusual. But neither is really the sort of book we are going to debate or have reflections on the meaning of life or anything. And that’s fine – sometimes we just need fun.
***This month's restaurant selection***
I found a new Mexican place to check out and yes, they have cocktails for those so inclined. This month we are doing Poblanos Grill & Bar in Clearwater. I would link the menu but if you want prices for this location, just use Google or Yelp and look at the posted pics.
***Not sure about book club or never been to one before? ***
Read the book (or some of the book). Come to the Meetup. Eat yummy food and chat with folks about what you thought about the book. REPEAT!
***Not sure where to get the book? ***
All books we select have a decent number of copies (at least 3-4 across all formats) at both the Hillsborough and Pinellas County Library. And, of course, you can always buy a copy.
