What we’re about
Who: Adults in their 20s & 30s
Where: Probably a bar in Reno, TBD dependent on group size (I'm hoping for 5?)
When: Once monthly on Mondays
Deep Dives & Drafts is a monthly Meetup for intellectually curious individuals who enjoy engaging in thought-provoking conversations and exploring complex ideas. Each gathering offers an opportunity to delve into unfamiliar topics, challenge assumptions, and gain new perspectives in a lively, thoughtful environment (while enjoying a cold beer, if that is your thing.)
Whether you're an expert in everything or nothing, an enthusiastic generalist, or just someone who thrives on stimulating dialogue, this group is designed to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and collaborative learning. We’ll explore a wide range of subjects—from technology and philosophy to economics, history, health, science, culture, and beyond—drawing on books, articles, podcasts, and other media to anchor our discussions.
Join us if you're excited to learn, eager to exchange perspectives, and ready to engage deeply with compelling topics in the company of fellow nerds.
How it works:
Each month, we’ll select a central theme to explore. In advance of the meetup, we’ll share a curated list of resources (readings, podcasts, etc.) in the event description to help frame the conversation. While you're encouraged to engage with the materials beforehand, it is not a requirement for participation; the focus is on open dialogue and idea-sharing—not on having all the answers. As we become established, we may encourage specific members to present on topics that they are passionate and knowledgeable about, in lieu of advance reading materials.
A quick note on group norms:
This is a space for curiosity, not confrontation. While we may explore complex or even controversial topics, all discussion should remain respectful, grounded in the materials we’ve engaged with, and centered on a spirit of shared learning. No personal attacks, no hidden agendas, no tolerance for hate speech, bullying, or any other behavior that disrupts a constructive atmosphere.
This group is explicitly inclusive of all races, genders, orientations, abilities, and neurotypes. Diverse perspectives enrich our conversations, and we’re committed to fostering a space where everyone feels safe, heard, and respected.

For our inaugural meetup, we’ll explore the emergence of technologies that have reshaped our political, economic, social, and cultural landscapes. I’m not an expert in these areas, but I’m hoping we’ll attract a few attendees who can offer insights, perspectives, or simply curious questions.Suggested media to spark conversation:
- Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism - Yanis Varoufakis
- The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and The Twenty-first Century's Greatest Dilemma - Mustafa Suleyman
- Technology trends in the creative and cultural industries sector: a systematic literature review (link)
- (If you have a related book or article that you would like to include, please post it in the comments!)
How does this group work?
Each month we will select a topic to explore. The meetup will be anchored by a set of recommended readings, podcasts, or other media intended to provide theoretical context and a foundation for discourse. Our aim is to foster intellectual engagement, thoughtful dialogue, and collective learning.
Meetups will be in public spaces (bars) where folks can order beverages if they wish.
