Nerd Nite London Jan 2024

Details

Nerd Nite London is a monthly event where three speakers give 18-21 minute fun-yet-informative talks across all disciplines, while the audience drinks along.

Happy New Year Nerds - this is our first of eight events this year and what better way to start that with some (typo)graphic swearing, ultra processed food (samples available for purchase from the bar!) and a bold attempt to wrap the entire history of cinema up in 21 mins and one historic venue!

Address: The Backyard Comedy Club, 231 Cambridge Heath Road, London E2 0EL / also online
Details: Wednesday, 17 January, 2024. Pre-drinks from 6.30. Doors open at 7:15pm, event starts at 7.30pm. The online stream will go live at 7:15pm, with the speakers starting at 7.30pm and will be available for around 24 hours.
Be there and be square.

TICKETS CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED HERE.

HOW TO FIND US?
The group will gather at a table by the entrance for pre-drinks and a chat from 6.30. Lookout for the Meetup sign!

FIRST EVENT AND FEELING NERVOUS?
We understand it can feel a bit stressful joining a group of strangers (especially for us nerds!) Our Meetup host Anna will be here to make sure you feel welcome and meet each other in the group. Feel free to pop a message in the event chat or let her know on the day of the event if you have any questions or concerns!

#### Sausages, semantics and sustainability by Jenny Chapman

"Ultra processing" has blazed into our vocabulary in recent years, but what does it actually mean and should you be so worried you drop your kebab? Is it just junk food in disguise or is there something more sinister going on? Are long ingredients lists the worst thing since... sliced bread? And what does all of this have to do with pandemic risk, water pollution and global emissions targets? Science has come to the rescue with the answers to all of these questions, so join to find out how the sausage is made.

#### Grawlix – the curious story of sweary type by Lydia Thornley

“Could we have some sweary type?” is possibly the best request Lydia Thornley has ever had in a design briefing. Delving into this, it turns out to have a name. So Lydia has been on a voyage of nerdery to find out more, via cartoon history, Scrabble, AI, a sitcom, the most visually-boring symbol and country music.

#### One Cinema, 110 Years of History by Nigel Smith

The Screen on the Green is a rarity in London - a single-screen cinema that’s been in continuous business for well over a century. During that time it’s seen the arrival of ‘talkies’, post-war decline as ‘feapit', a rebirth as “the coolest cinema in London” (according to Quentin Tarantino) and now a swanky outpost of the Everyman chain. Through the history of this special cinema, you’ll discover the story of 110 years of cinema-going in London.

All proceeds from Nerd Nite London go to charity. this year we are partnering with The Shine Trust to help foster a new generation of nerds.
