We're excited to announce this joint event with Engineer's Australia. We'd encourage anyone interested in the success of the energy transition to attend, whether you are an engineer or not!
The transition to sustainable energy sources is a monumental shift that is as significant as the industrial revolution. The world is moving away from energy sources that produce greenhouse gas emissions and towards sustainable alternatives. This shift not only impacts how we generate energy, but also how we convert and consume it.
For engineers in Western Australia, a state that is both a major producer and consumer of energy, this transition presents new challenges and opportunities. Engineers can leverage their skills to accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy future by developing and implementing innovative solutions that reduce reliance on traditional energy sources and increase the use of renewable energy.
As the world continues to shift towards sustainable energy, engineers will play a critical role in shaping the future of energy production and consumption. By embracing this transition and developing new technologies and processes, engineers can help create a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.
In this presentation you will gain:
- An understanding of the challenges and opportunities that the energy transition creates for WA.
- An appreciation of the critical role engineers have in ensuring the success of the transition.
- An opportunity to network with engineers and business leaders with an interest in achieving net zero.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS (in order of appearance)
Max van Someren is an energy systems analyst, R&D team leader and (in a former life) ship designer. He has held leadership roles at KBR, AEMO, Austal Ships and Frazer-Nash Consultancy.
Max's passion is the energy transition. He is the Director and Co-founder of Causal Dynamics, a startup which combines data analytics and engineering analysis to model and improve the performance of future energy systems. He is also the Co-founder of the Net Zero Network, a not for profit which helps members identify how they can have the greatest impact in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
Doug Aberle spent the first 40 years of his career in the electricity industry. This included 10 years in leadership positions at Muja Power Station and culminated in 6 years as Managing Director of Western Power.
Through his business, Marple Bridge Pty Ltd, Doug currently provides coaching, mentoring and consultancy services to senior business professionals.
His clients include high profile engineering companies, cover a wide variety of industries both in Australia and overseas and span private and government entities.
Doug also continues to consult to the energy industry with a focus on supporting the paradigm shift from a linear delivery model to an organic, integrated and sustainable prosumer centric model. His clients include the Australian Energy Council and a large renewable generator.
Howard Thomas is formally technically accredited as a Fellow of Engineers Australia and a Chartered Professional Chemical Engineer and has worked on energy installations all over the world, from roles as a technician to executive consultancy.
He combines an in-depth technical background with a wide ranging business experience but is probably best known for his ability to make the complex simple.
History tells us complexity destroys value. Finding the optimum balance between systems, technology and human cognition is key to effective performance.
Kerry Hill is an experienced Engineering and Maintenance leader in the Resources, Infrastructure and Healthcare sectors. Kerry’s career spans across nearly 20 years in drilling engineering, utilities and power generation, plant commissioning/maintenance and energy economics. She oversees Operational Readinesss and Asset Management at Covalent Lithium, a Wesfarmers and SQM Joint Venture.
Outside of work, Kerry is an active committee member of the Net Zero Network and Co-Chair of the United Nations Women Perth Chapter. She has a 1 year old and a 3 year old with her husband Michael, along with their two blue heeler dogs (the original children).
