Talk Social and Science!

Details
Dr. Kristin Alford will be sharing with us how online tools are being used to make learningmore exciting for school students. It's an innovative way of using technology to encourage people to get into topics of interest that they may not normally be engaged in. Here's what she's talking about:
I’m a Scientist, Get me out of Here! is an award-winning science enrichment and engagement activity, funded by the Wellcome Trust. It's an X Factor-style competition for scientists, where students are the judges. Scientists and students talk online on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
Scott Mills will be sharing some fantastic insights into the use of crowdsourcing, citizen science and open source hardware/software in scientific research. This approach can have significant impact in just about any industry. Here's what he's talking about
ScienceMob is a play on words, while the science is obvious the mob stands for a large group and mobile tools. ScienceMob Inc. is a recently incorporated association with defined aims to create a shared environment for research and development in Mobile, Sensing and Digital communication technologies, as well as the development of standards for such applications. This includes both hardware and software solutions. ScienceMob was founded by a group of individuals from Google, Harris Corporation, The Royal Institution of Australia, Adelaide University, James Cook University, ARCS and Gaia Resources who have strong affiliations to "Citizen Science" groups and research programs. It has grown from the realisation that we are entering an age were mobile computing and science will become a key part of modern living, we wish to create opportunities for scientists and the public to engage in this revolution in a meaningful and constructive way.
As usual, there will be a chance to network with people, and also discuss what sorts of possibilities there are in these areas. Look forward to seeing you on the 16th at the RI Aus!
