About us
This Meetup group is sponsored by New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors (NMVFO), a service oriented, all volunteer, non-political organization dedicated to improving trails and outdoor facilities throughout the state.
By joining this Meetup group you will be able to volunteer for projects and participate in social events, training opportunities, and other NMVFO activities. (You can also join these activities without joining the Meetup group, by directly visiting nmvfo.org)
Go to www.nmvfo.org/projects for a list of this year's upcoming projects, or the NMVFO Volunteer FAQ page http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq for more information. (*You will have to copy/paste any links or email addresses, as you cannot click on addresses from Meetup text.*)
NMVFO has been helping maintain trails and public lands for over 30 years. Work projects range from one day in nearby locations to weekend camping projects or even backpack work trips to pristine wilderness, all over the state. Working with forest rangers and other public lands representatives, NMVFO provides strong leadership, training, tools and meals on projects. Note that a parent or guardian must accompany all minors, and pets are not permitted on any project.
Working in the outdoors, keeping public lands accessible and enjoying the camaraderie of like-minded people are some of the benefits of participation on the NMVFO projects. We have fun and lots of laughter as we learn about trail work and new outdoor places. Above all we feel good about doing satisfying work with worthwhile results.
***In this Meetup it will be extremely important to show up for projects to which you have committed. Advance food is purchased, tools are provided and land management agencies are advised of the number of volunteers for the project. YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO ATTEND. Please adhere to this requirement for work project participation with NMVFO Meetup. (Social events, presentations, trainings and other events will operate like regular Meetup events unless otherwise noted.)***
It is also required that you sign up on the project description page on the NMVFO website as soon as you RSVP for a project on Meetup (you will not be considered a part of the project until you do so). This allows the Project Leader to keep a count of attendees in order to coordinate with land representatives and cooks who buy food on a budget; arrange tools; and to be able to contact participants in a timely, efficient way.
Since 1982, New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors (NMVFO) have been recruiting people like you to volunteer for service projects that benefit trails and other recreational sites in national and state parks, forests, monuments, wilderness areas, city open space areas, and other public lands. The projects scheduled this year help maintain these valuable resources. NMVFO is a 501(c)3 all-volunteer nonprofit organization.

Trail Building and Maintenance Workshop
Holiday Park Community Center, 11710 Comanche Road Northeast, Albuquerque, NM, USHave you ever wondered how the trails you hike or ride on were constructed and how they are maintained? The New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors will be conducting its annual Trails Workshop on two Saturdays in March in cooperation with the Albuquerque Open Space Division. The first session on March 14 is an introduction to trail work consisting of an indoor class followed by some outdoor practice in the Tijeras Canyon Biozone Open Space. In addition to a Meetup RSVP, you MUST ALSO REGISTER and obtain more information by going to a detailed project description on NMVFO’s website: Trail Workshop - Classroom (CABQ Open Space) - New Mexico Volunteers For The Outdoors. Space is limited, so sign up soon.
There is a second session on March 21 that offers supervised on-the-job training, also in the Tijeras Canyon Open Space. The March 14 introductory session is NOT a prerequisite for this field training project, which is also open to more experienced trail workers. If you think you may be interested, here’s a link to the project description: Trail Workshop - Field (CABQ Open Space) - New Mexico Volunteers For The Outdoors.
