The Future of Equity in Tech

Details

Many philanthropic organizations are grappling with how to improve equity through the work they fund. An equitable world requires we collectively shift what we value and how we work together. This means we need to change how technology is designed and created, who is involved, and the definitions of success. There are many different groups to consider, including social impact organizations, technologists, policymakers, and communities. But connected to all of those is philanthropy. As technology leaders inside of foundations and as investors, you could make changes that influence every other group for the better.

Doing so will take change inside philanthropy, too. Let’s talk about how we do it:

  • Fund emergent spaces for innovation
  • Increase competition and demand on improvement instead of creation
  • Catalyze community ownership

All of this is possible and it can start with you!

Meet our experts:
AMY SAMPLE WARD (they/them) believes that technology should be accessible and accountable to everyone, especially communities historically and systemically excluded from the digital world. They are the CEO of NTEN, a nonprofit creating a world where missions and movements are more successful through the skillful and equitable use of technology. Amy’s second book, Social Change Anytime Everywhere, was a Terry McAdam Book Award finalist.

AFUA BRUCE (she/her) is the Principal of the ANB Advisory Group LLC and a leading public interest technologist who has spent her career working at the intersection of technology, policy, and society. Her career has spanned the government, non-profit, private, and academic sectors, as she has held senior science and technology positions at DataKind, the White House, the FBI, and IBM. Afua has a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, as well as an MBA.
