About us

New West Mensdate

A casual brunch for men in New Westminster.

Most months it's exactly that ...... a table, a meal, and men talking. Every so often I bring in someone who cares about men's mental health and is actually doing something about it, so you'll hear from people worth hearing from without anybody standing at a podium for three hours.

What you get out of it. Fellowship, first. Men in your own city who know your name and notice when you don't turn up. Beyond that, practical stuff ...... tools and knowledge for looking after yourself properly, and for being useful to the men around you when they're struggling. Most of us were never handed any of that.

How it runs. Monthly, here in New West. Some months a brunch with a guest or two. Some months just a round table at a local restaurant where everyone buys their own breakfast. Same thing underneath either way: a room where it's safe to say the thing.

Nobody lectures you. You're in the conversation, not watching it. Come alone or bring a mate. No experience required and no story you have to be ready to tell.

Your host. Jhöl Unger hosts and is there in person at every event. He's an author and men's mental health consultant. If you turn up not knowing anyone, find him ...... that's his job.

Cost. Joining is free. Most months you just pay for your own food at the venue. The occasional catered event has a ticket and the price is always on the listing before you sign up. Nobody is making money off this.

Affiliation. The group is run by The Mensdate Project, a federally registered Canadian not-for-profit working on men's mental health and reducing the rate of loss by suicide among men. We're not a clinic and this isn't therapy ...... we're men at a table. If you need professional support, we'll gladly point you toward it.

Men, 18 and over. New West is the first city and this is the founding room. What it becomes gets decided by the men who show up.
